A study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating, be it a meal or just a snack, too close to your planned bedtime can increase your caloric intake and make you gain weight, seemingly overnight.

This happens because the human body is not designed to metabolize food as effectively late at night as it does during the day.  Experts suggest eating your final meal of the day three to four hours before your planned bedtime.
